My profession What word describes you best? Why did you start running? What keeps you motivated? Best advice you got from a fellow runner?
Ashraff Millick Supply Chain and Logistics Management Outgoing and adventurous! I started running for a healthier lifestyle and got hooked! I enjoy the social aspect of running and the various road and trail options you get to explore the beautiful outdoors To be consistent in your training and above all have a good jol
Janine Zitianellis Advanced Analytics Consultant (a what??? A Number cruncher!) " 'n bok vir sports" In 2013 I suffered from severe PSD (postnatal depression) and one of my friends I try suggested little walking, I started slowly one block, then run walk two blocks and before I knew it I completed my first comrades 9 months later in honour of my late brother that passed away 4 months earlier in a tragic bike accident. Yes- it escalated quickly! :) Fomo! Never compare yourself to others, always try and beat your own personal best.
Nicola Davidson I'm a freelance copywriter in the advertising industry. Be yourself - no one's better at it than you I started trail running in 2014 - I had committed to giving up alcohol for a year, and needed something to do with all my free time. I'm planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in October this year with two friends, to raise awareness and funds for diabetes and depression. Every time I feel like hitting the snooze button, I remember that lying in bed won't help me raise money, and it won't help me climb a mountain either. Don't fight the slide. The sweeper on my second ever trail told me this (I'm always at the back so I hang out with the sweepers a LOT). What he meant was, when you feel yourself falling, don't try to correct yourself as you could wind up injured. Instead go with the flow, be prepared for when you fall, and then get right back up again. It's the best advice I've ever received - both for trail running, and for life.
Samantha Holtzhausen I am a physiotherapist, with a special interest in Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation. Adventurous; happy; dynamic; extrovert I have a big love for the mountains and just being outside, so trail running made the most sense. Since my first trail race, my stoke for the sport just kept growing! My patients, mostly. I treat people every day that really struggle to breathe, due to chronic lung conditions. They are often my driving force to get out there on difficult days. The only run you'll regret is the one you don't go for. So get out there - use what you have and do what you can, you'll be better for it!
Anel Lewis Journalist/PR manager A fun-loving, committed and dedicated Mom I started running in 2013 I started running after my children were born, as I wanted to be fit and strong, for them - and then I carried on running as it is the only time that I truly have for myself when life gets busy. The feeling of freedom I get from running, and knowing that it keeps me healthy (and sane!) To run my own race, at my own pace
